Our staff - what it's like working for Support for Living

Bilal HussainBilal Hussain, Deputy Manager says:  "I started working for Support for Living in August 2008 and if I am honest, I hadn’t heard much, or knew much, about them. I started as a Support Worker and spent 14 months at Uneeda Drive, one of the smaller services. I was promoted to be Deputy Manager at Star Road in November 2009 and I am enjoying the added responsibility. I have nothing but positive things to say about Support for Living, from the staff to senior management and HR. Everybody within the organisation is willing to help each other out and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time.  What’s good about Support for Living? Pretty much everything as they always strive to improve. I feel I made the right career choice and Support for Living are more than happy to provide the support to help me develop professionally."

Pollo Fatalla"I believe that Support for Living is one of the leading organisations in providing a high standard of care for the people that they support and care for, and at the same time provide staff  with the opportunity to develop their career in social care and have the chance to work in a very friendly and encouraging environment.

I joined Support for Living in April 2008 and since then I have managed to get NVQ L2 and will be finishing my NVQ L3 by January 2010.  I am now a Deputy Manager at my work place and all this was achieved with the continuous help and support from within the organisation.”

Catherine KirazCatherine Kiraz worked as the Office Manager at Allied House for two years and has now decided on a career change.  She writes:

"I enjoy working for Support for Living because there's scope to move around in different positions - there are always opportunities. I used to be Office Manager but wanted a change so decided to get involved in the care side and became a Support Worker. I am really enjoying my new role, it is fun and rewarding."

Antonio Pereira

"Nothing in my past career (mechanical engineering) could have prepared me for the joy and fulfilment that I have encountered, not only on a professional but also on a personal level. The management is of the type that you learn about but very rarely actually experience and the job itself is rewarding, always different and utterly fantastic.  I am looking forward to many happy years ahead!"

Fiona Brown"My name is Fiona Brown.  I have been in supported employment  since November 2003.  I am a receptionist at the Activity and Resource Centre.

I enjoy working at the Centre.   I like meeting new people and completing the tasks I am given.  I especially enjoy the Breakaway ring around.

Coming to work gives me some focus to my day.  My colleagues give me plenty of encouragement and support.  I enjoy socialising with them as well.  Working for Support for Living is great!"

Mandeep Jhalli, Admin Assistant

Mandeep Jhalli has worked in supported employment as an Admin Assistant at Support for living for nearly three years.

"I enjoy working for Support for Living because the people are very friendly.  I work every Wednesday 11am to 3pm. I enjoy the work that I am given.  I also like doing different things.

I do many jobs in reception some of which are getting the milk, tea, coffee and sugar, I empty the shredder bag, unpack the deliveries and do photocopying. I also help finance stamp invoices."

Finola Sullivan"I have worked for the organisation for over 9 years and have had the opportunity to work in a variety of different services and with a lot of wonderful people.   Currently I am working in a new service providing Floating Support to 11 tenants with mental health needs, the aim of the service is to improve their independence and eventually move on to more independent living in the community. I love the challenge of my new role and am learning new skills on a daily basis as well as working among a very experienced team.

As if I didn't have enough to do I am also a Unison rep, a moving and handling key trainer and I am part of the planning committee for the  football tournament/funday!!!!"

Kadija BunduKadija Bundu, Support Worker, says  "I do like working for Support for Living because of their person centred/service user approach to work.

Working for this organisation as a staff member you have the opportunity to improve your knowledge and experience through training, and meeting and liaising with external agencies.

The fair treatment and opportunity given to staff, regardless of your race, colour or sex, is tremendous.  I am given the opportunity and the encouragement to move up my career path and am offered all the support needed to do this."
