About Intensive Interaction
The techniques of Intensive Interaction were
formulated specifically for use with people with profound disabilities,
people who generally don’t use words to communicate.
When we use intensive interaction we’re
trying to identify an individual's own language and then learn to speak
it fluently with enthusiasm and creativity. We do this to build rapport
which in turn helps us to create a safe space for someone to step into
and express themselves.
One of the keys is to recognise that whatever someone is doing is
meaningful to them, even if we don’t know what it means and even if it’s
not how we communicate and express ourselves.
