..... therefore I am Art Exhibition
An exhibition exploring a sense of self by people with learning disabilities

‘.....therefore I am’ is a bold exhibition offering artists and visitors the chance to explore what makes them who they are.

The exhibits have been created by artists from
Breakaway working with professional artists,
Sally
McKay and
Emma Smith.
Exhibits include a fascinating ceramics installation featuring multiple sea-creature like objects; a “library” of handmade books; a self-portrait by a recognised artist with autism; video pieces of music and drama and a series of abstract canvases representing individual as well as collective identities.
Support for Living Chief Executive Nigel Turner believes this is an
opportunity to focus on Breakaway members’ abilities: “This exhibition
is a chance to challenge stereotypical views of people with learning
disabilities. It will illustrate how art can be a great leveller and how
individuals with recognised learning disabilities can harbour
undiscovered talent. We hope that this exhibition will help both artists
and visitors discover something new about themselves and their views.”

Visitors are also making their own contributions by completing a ‘.....therefore I am’ card and these are being hung on a “Lifeline” hung across the exhibition walls. Support for Living has also received cards from celebrities, politicians and well-known artists and these are exhibited at the exhibition. These include contributions from Gordon Brown, Sir Michael Caine, Joanna Trollope, Jeremy Paxman and Elaine Page, to name a few.
