It's official!  Southside Partnership and Support for Living to merge

Southside Partnership and Support for Living have just confirmed that the two organisations will merge this year. We announced we were in merger talks back in September, and since that time have been working to get to know each other better and to be sure that the merger is in everyone’s interests. The merger will take place on 1 April 2010.  Read more in our first merger newsletter or check out the merger website www.sspsflmerger.org.uk.

Breakaway's unique exhibition on the theme of personal identity was officially opened by the Deputy Mayor of Ealing last week.  More than 100 guests attended the private champagne reception.  The Breakaway artists worked with professionals to create self portraits, ceramics, abstract canvasses, sculputres and videos.  Celebrities were also asked to send in postcards describing themselves.

Our PR consultant, Paula Scott, also managed to secure the services of caterers Jackson Gilmour Ltd. who had just won the Event Awards “Caterer of the Year 2009” and we can highly recommend them.  You can visit their website at  www.jacksongilmour.com.  Their canapes were superb!

The exhibition is being held at the Studio, PM Gallery, Walpole Park, Ealing, W5 5EQ until
7 November and we hope to take the exhibition to other venues in due course.    Read more.......

Day trip to Brighton!

Brighton day tripBrighton BronchoBrighton day trip

On 3 September 2009, we went to see the sea … at Brighton!  The weather was waiting for us, and greeted our arrival with strong winds and periods of rain; it was exciting to see some brave souls wind surfing. The weather didn’t dampen our enthusiasm as you can see.   Some of us took the opportunity to visit the pier, and the Horror Hotel, and the other facilities Brighton has to offer.

What was particularly enjoyable about the day, was having the opportunity to meet and spend time with ‘new faces’.  There are a few more photos on the photo gallery page too.

For those who went on the trip, the LOOK AHEAD Groupwould welcome your feedback of the day, so that we can improve future outings; do let us have your suggestions.

Picnic at Osterley park

Picnic at OsterleyPicnic at OsterleyPicnic at Osterley

Jan Harris and her team arranged a great picnic in Osterley park on 13 August.  Steve, Carolyn Berry's husband arrived with some muscle to erect a rather grand gazebo as the weather looked decidedly iffy, only to be told to take it down again by Osterley park staff!  Never mind, the weather was good to us in the end.  People arrived from the services on and off all afternoon and after much eating and drinking, games were played.  Philip, Barbara and Maureen were stars of the rounders match, with not much being said about the skills of the staff!  A great afternoon out and this looks like being a regular event each summer.

Cupcakes for Tea!

Cupcake tea partyCupcakesCupcake tea party

Great fun was had by the staff at Allied House when they were invited to the Cupcake Tea Party held at the Activity and Resource Centre.  The tea party itself was actually going to become part of the art work the Breakaway group was working on and we were invited to join in the making of the cakes but seemed to be happier eating them!

Upon arrival we were presented with a booklet showing drawings, recipes and all the flavours created.  We tried them all!  We then had to add comments and state our favourites. Not difficult, they were all great.

These booklets will then become part of a cook book which will eventually be a 3-d piece of art in itself. It may even become an entry in the forthcoming Art Exhibition!

Football Fun Day

Another successful Football Fun Day was held on 15 May at the Linford Christie Stadium.  The football planning committee consisted of service users and staff.  Chaired by Finola Sullivan, the members were John Keaveny, Yvette Watson, Aarron Smith, Kevin Sasso, Laura Tully and Michael Cassidy.  It took months of hard work but again, was an outstanding success and looks like being a regular yearly event for Support for Living.

Support for Living takes on staff in Harrow

Harrow staff and service usersHarrow staffNigel Turner, Chief Executive with service user

On 1 March, staff in five learning disability services in Harrow – two registered as care homes and three supported living – transferred to Support for Living. Nigel Turner, Chief Executive, said that he was delighted to welcome everyone to Support for Living. These services were already Support for Living’s responsibility, but for historical reasons the staff had previously been employed by Harrow Mencap. Now that the services are directly managed, Nigel said he hoped that the people using them would feel more properly part of the organisation and enjoy some of the events which are organised. The transfer took place after about 5 months of consultation with service users, their relatives and staff.

Treat Me Right! Launch

Treat Me Right! Launch1Treat Me Right! Launch 2Treat Me Right! Launch 3

Wednesday 4 February saw the successful official launch of the Treat Me Right! project in Ealing Hospital.  People from Ealing Partners, Carers Together and Ealing Link joined us in talking to hospital staff and members of the public about the project.  There was lots of interest from hospital staff in attending the awareness training that begins in February and potential 'champions' in the making.  For further information click here.
